CSKA were in great form in the group stage of the competition, winning five of their six games and drawing the other to gather 16 of a possible 18 points in what was one of the more difficult groups in the competition, containing Palermo and Sparta Prague. The Russian giants also had a good domestic season, finishing in second place with 62 points from 30 games.
