Does Messi need to win the World Cup to be the greatest ever?

The most skillful player of a generation performing in the finest club side of all time but can the newest World superstar be named along side the moguls of the game Pele, Maradona or Zidane till he has steered his country to the most eminent award of all, The World Cup.

Messi brings immeasurable qualities to the pitch every time he enters and engenders a sense of exhilaration among any crowd as soon as he touches the ball, they know something striking is about to happen. Since debuting at an early age of 16 the Argentine has never looked back, improving his consistency of performance and goal scoring record season after season, this week beating a Barcelona club record by rolling up 48 goals this year. At 23 Leo has gained everything the club game has to offer including the Champions League twice. He has also picked up the world player of the year the past two years by igniting up the game with an individual style that is unparalleled. Does he really need to win the World Cup to be the finest ever and If he does he may stand solely as the best player ever looking down on the rest.

The story is too old to be commented.

nice blog, my answer is YES he need to win world cup to be the best ever, (and he will win it in Brazil 2014!).

I don't think he has to win the world cup to be the worlds greatest ever. To be the greatest player in the world doesnt have anything to do with witch country you are born. But there is a fair chance that Argentina will win 2014:-)

It helps, but if a briliant player is from a country with a really bad national team, he would still be the best, right?

I think a player would be the best of all time if he really is that good, but I think its to early to mark Messi the best at all time. Maradona has proven more. Ronaldo was outstanding for a while, the same was Ronaldinho. In a few years we will see if Messi can hold his level. Ronaldinho didnt. Ronaldo was injured.

Agree that is way to early. But he has made a great start and have many great years to come. Hope he will be lucky and stay away from injuries. I think its imortant that he stays in Barca out his career. He will never reach up on that level in any other league or club. Maradona is still the king, and Messi would say the same.

Yeah, I don't see him going anywhere, it's like he was born to play for barca. Yes, Maradona is the king but I'd like to see Messi being praised equally to him and Pele in 10 years or so.
